Karla & Derek – Cozy Engagement Session |

Planning for your engagement session can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. For Karla & Derek, their session was styled by Cocktails and Details, and every aspect was planned!  As you plan for your engagement session I wanted to share with you a few tips about looking and feeling your best, and creating photos that you’ll want to display always!  These two and their dog Jax were an absolute pleasure to photograph – so easy going, and wanting to truly enjoy their session!

1. Location, Location, Location
Choosing the right background and surroundings will enhance the look and feel of your images from your engagement session. In addition to location, time of day can really create the best look for your photos. Later afternoon/early evening close to sunset is the ideal time for photos. The light is soft and diffuse, and sometimes bright and golden. Choosing a setting where the sun can be behind you is perfect. Watch for distracting elements such as houses, benches, street signs, power lines etc. And if you’re not sure, ask your photographer! Alexis from Cocktails and Details asked for advice when she was setting up the decor, and I was able to help her choose the ideal spot based also on the light. If you’re not using a stylist for your shoot, feel free to ask me! I’m very happy to help my couples choose the best location, and make suggestions! I may look at things a little bit differently, and it’s my job to help.

2. Colour is Key
While it’s not ideal for you and your partner to have identical outfits, colour coordination can be a great idea. The tones that Karla & Derek chose for their last set of photos is echoed in the styling from the first set, and the clothing from the first photos ties in to the natural setting. Avoid mixing bold patterns, and don’t be afraid of bright colours! Comfortable clothes will help you feel more relaxed during your engagement session

3. It’s not just about the photos
Your engagement session is the story of one moment in time from your relationship – how you hold each other right now, how you look at each other, the emotions that you have as you get closer to getting married. You can use the session as a chance to enjoy a fun date night with your sweetheart, to have photos to use for your guest book and save the dates, and to see how you feel being professionally photographed! It should feel fun and romantic,

4. Showcase your Engagement Ring!
Incorporating your engagement ring into your engagement session can be very creative, and also romantic. And when you have a super sweet puppy, he can get involved (check out the photos below)! Your engagement ring is another one of the details of your wedding that is relatively small but holds so much significance. Sometimes a family heirloom, sometimes chosen together. Sometimes large and eye catching, sometimes subtle. It can be showcased during your engagement session both on your finger and off! I love trying to creatively use my surroundings for a gorgeous close-up photo of the beautiful ring!

5. Get Ready
These photos will last forever, so you want to look and feel your best! For great skin make sure to stay hydrated prior to your shoot, and avoid alcohol the night before. Consider having your hair and makeup professionally done! Your hands will be in a lot of the images so make sure your nails are tidy, and consider a manicure. Self-care is important so that you can relax during your shoot.

6. What Happens Next?
Make sure you know what happens after your shoot, and what to expect. My engagement sessions are usually about an hour long, we go to a couple of different locations, and you can incorporate a clothing change (although not everyone does). Your photos are ready about 2 weeks after your shoot, but I send a sneak peek ahead of time! I edit in a natural way, but do add some pop to your images. The photos below are a good example of one of my engagement sessions, but with some added styling! The majority of my couples do not include decor in their shoots, but it adds a different feel!
